✍🏻 Inspiration of the week
"Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends."
- Walt Disney
Hi friend,
Ever wondered why Disney is called the "Happiest Place on Earth"?
It’s not just because of the thrilling rides or iconic characters; it’s the immersive experience that turns a day at Disney into a lifetime memory. Let’s explore how Disney uses UX to create magic and keep visitors coming back for more.
UX Story of the Week: Disney’s Secret to an Enchanting Experience
Disney's story begins in 1923 with Walt Disney’s vision of bringing animated stories to life. Fast forward to today, and Disney isn’t just a media company—it’s a global entertainment empire that masters the art of creating extraordinary experiences.
What makes Disney special? It’s the attention to every little detail, from the moment a guest steps into a Disney park to the time they leave. Disney's UX strategy revolves around one core principle: total immersion. Everything, from the park design to the background music and the behavior of cast members, is meticulously crafted to transport visitors into a different world.
Disney achieves this by focusing on three key elements: storytelling, surprise, and personalization. In its theme parks, for instance, Disney employs “Imagineers” who combine imagination with engineering to design attractions that are not just rides but fully immersive experiences. The parks are designed with visual storytelling cues—like forced perspective on buildings and hidden Mickeys—to ensure every corner adds to the story.
Beyond physical spaces, Disney extends its magical experience into the digital realm with the My Disney Experience app. This app provides a seamless experience, allowing visitors to plan their day, book FastPasses, find characters, and even order food, all from their smartphones. It’s a brilliant example of how digital UX can enhance physical experiences.
Lessons Learned: Key Takeaways for UX Designers
- Focus on Storytelling: Disney’s success is rooted in its ability to tell stories that resonate emotionally. Use storytelling to create meaningful user experiences.
- Design for Delight: Go beyond meeting expectations; design moments of surprise and delight that make your product memorable.
- Create Seamless Journeys: Whether it’s in the park or online, Disney ensures a smooth experience at every touchpoint. Strive for seamlessness in your user journeys.
